June 6. Town and Gallery

We had a day of looking around the town, the streets are strangely European looking in style, and there are lots coffee and vintage clothes places. The town reminds me of a Chinese Brighton in that it is very laid back and the long streets filled with higgledy piggledy shops lead down to the sea. The Alley-ways are like the Lanes here. It was great wondering around and window shopping. At 5 we visited an exhibition at Nothing Gallery. On the way I talked to Sigurdur Gudmundsson  whom with his wife Ineke set up the Residency. he reminded me of his exhibition at the Baltic Gallery in Newcastle, of which I remembered seeing, as he was one of the First to exhibit there at the Opening.
He makes abstract sculptures and photographs of himself in odd, absurd and interesting locations and places. This reminds me of Fluxus artists and I really want to talk to him more in the future about what relationship he may have had with this art movement.

Examples here:

At Nothing Gallery we saw an exhibition of a young Chinese Artist who made drawings and whom had some very vibrant sketchbooks of everyday scenes. We also met some of the other Artist in Residents from Germany and Holland. They were all very interesting and as excited as us. They were all surprised when we told them we lived in China. I look forward to getting to know them more again tomorrow as we will all be having lunch together.
